Beauty Edit: Skincare Over 40 feat. Re-Nutriv

beauty over 40 - woahstyle.com.jpg

With my 40th birthday looming just around the corner, I've been stepping up my skincare game and incorporating more serums, facial massages, and liquid exfoliators into my daily routine.

While the idea of getting fillers and botox is tempting, I'm not quite there yet, and honestly, I don't know if it's for me. (Talk to me again in a couple of years and we'll see how I feel then.)

Anyway, this skincare enthusiast is always looking to try something new and do whatever I can to step up my skincare routine, including testing out the latest lotions, and potions, but I guess that's nothing new.

Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv skincare_8256.jpg

Just recently I began using a few items from the Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv collection.

The line is specifically made to target aging skin and areas of concern such as dull skin, lifting, firming, dryness, and dehydration.

It's suitable for normal to combination skin, is dermatologist tested, and won't clog pores.

A bit of background on the collection, Re-Nutriv's luxury formula contains Himalayan Gentian, a flower that thrives in the bitter cold of the world’s highest mountains. It's harvested by hand, before carefully extracting its regenerative energies.

On the skin, the Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Eye Creme smoothes over eyes with a silky texture that reminds me of La Mer's Eye Concentrate, a favorite of mine.

The Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Creme applies to the face with the same silky texture that absorbs into the skin quickly.

The Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Treatment Lotion feels like a fine toner that's patted into the skin before serum or moisturizer. It leaves skin hydrated and soft.

And finally, the Re-Nutriv Hydrating Foam Cleanser has a gentle lather that softly scented and leaves skin feeling soft.

Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv skincare_8255.jpg

My skin has been looking better these days. Whether it's courtesy of Estée Lauder, that extra bit of sleep I've been getting, or all of those facial massages, who knows. The skincare line is damn good so let's just chalk it up to that.

At the end of the day what I do know is this, taking care of your skin by moisturizing, drinking lots of water, staying out of the sun, and wearing SPF is the best thing you could do for yourself long term, and it's never too late to start.

Estée Lauder skincare in this post is a PR sample. All opinions are my own.

The Ultimate Gift Guide For Plant Enthusiasts

The Ultimate Gift Guide For Plant Parents_7622.jpg

The plant community is thriving in 2020 mainly due to the fact we're all spending more time at home.

For me anyway, I can't think of a more therapeutic activity (okay, other than meditation) than looking after my plants. It's a rewarding hobby where I'm constantly learning about each plant variety and their different levels of care.

In fact, my appreciation for plants has grown so much this year that I launched an online plant shop. If you haven't already, make sure you check me out on Etsy, at WoahPlants

And with that, WoahStyle's first gift guide this year is dedicated to the plant person in your life.

Below you'll find an array of gifts and stocking stuffers, from $8 - $230 that plant enthusiasts will enjoy.

Happy gift giving!

GIFT GUIDE FOR THE PLANT ENTHUSIAST

Monstera Species Unisex T-shirt, Woah Plants $50

This Monstera species t-shirt is the first piece of clothing on my plant shop, WoahPlants, and is sure to be a hit with plant enthusiasts or just fashion enthusiasts in general. I had my favourite Saint Laurent and Balenciaga pieces in mind when I designed this shirt and approached Toronto tattoo artist German Shible (aka, brother) with the idea.

The t-shirt features an original illustration of ten monstera species from common, uncommon, to rare: Monstera Deliciosa, Monstera Siltepecana, Monstera Thai Constellation, Monstera Dubia, Monstera sp. Peru, Monstera Obliqua, Monstera Pinnatipartita, Monstera Deliciosa Variegata, Monstera Adansonii, and Monstera Esqueleto.

Tall Stacking Planter Pot, Urban Outfitters $114

This minimalist pot from Areaware feels like a work of art with its curvy stacked shape. The design discretely integrates both a planter and saucer into one form. Lift out the bottom ring to reveal a hidden saucer.

Granted, it's expensive for a planter pot so this particular piece is for the person who appreciates home decor and likes to burn bougie candles if you catch my drift.

An Entertaining Story by India Hicks, Indigo $67.50

While technically note a plant book, and actually a book on the fine art of entertaining, the latest release from India Hicks features plenty of jaw-dropping photos from the author's Bahamas estate. Island living means that beautiful tropical plants play a huge role in bringing her dinner parties to life (just look at the cover). Plant enthusiasts will be inclined to step up their dining room with plenty of plants after reading this book.

Plant Tribe book by Igor Josifovic & Judith de Graeff, Amazon $37

If the person you're gifting to is into home decor then this book might be their jam. Featuring stories from others in the plant community as well as beautiful photos of their homes, this book is jam-packed with inspiration on how to display indoor plants.

New Plant Parent by Darryl Cheng, Amazon $32

This book by Toronto-based author, Darryl Cheng, dives into the science of plants and plant care from lighting to watering, nutrients, and propagation. I highly recommend this book to all plant enthusiasts, whether blessed with a green thumb or not. Even for someone such as myself who grew up around plants and started collecting plants over a decade ago, I find this book to be a wealth of knowledge and has helped me understand plant care on a broader level.

Paddywax PARKS Collection Candles, Amazon $41

If the plant person in your life also likes candles, this might be the gift for them. Inspired by seven National Parks in the U.S., Paddywax has captured the essence of each park with its own unique scent featuring- Yosemite, Olympic, Acadia, Great Smoky Mountains, Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Canyon.

Best of all, Paddywax supports the National Parks Foundation with a minimum donation of $25,000 to help protect more than 84 million acres of national parks through conservation and preservation.

Once the candle is done, the vessel can be cleaned out and reused as a planter pot. Perfect.

Monstera Wooden Serving Board, Urban Outfitters $64

This wooden serving board in the shape of Monstera Deliciosa leaf makes an excellent gift for those who love to cook and entertain. The stem of this serving board is actually a knife, making it easy to put together a spread of cheese and crackers.

6.75” Planter Pot with Stand, H&M $30

This matte black planter pot from H&M is as affordable as it is chic and comes with a sleek stand. It's excellent for displaying trees like fiddle leaf figs or rubber tree plants.

Pruning Scissors, Amazon $22

Pruning shears are a must in every plant collector's toolbox but the truth is, not all of them aesthetic enough to keep on display. These black stainless steel pruning scissors are precise and feature a fine tip - perfect for pruning bonsai trees. They also fit into dense foliage or hard to reach foliage without damaging plants.

Dr. Meter Light Meter, Amazon $56

This nifty gadget is a digital illuminance/light meter that can come in very handy when determining proper placement for indoor plants. As we all know, plants need light to survive, and sometimes we think our indoor plants are receiving plenty of ample natural sunlight when they might not be. This light meter is the perfect thing to help find the right spot for our plants so they can thrive and grow, grow, grow.

Feit Electric Full Spectrum Grow Light, Amazon $60

These LED grow lights by Feit Electric happen to be a favourite of mine (trust me, I have five of them). They come with a variety of fasteners to help you mount them on either your bookshelf, ceiling, or Ikea glass cabinet (aka, makeshift greenhouse). They provide plants with a full spectrum of light that they need to keep thriving in the winter. Best of all, they don’t run very hot.

TaoTronics Cool Mist Humidifier, Amazon $60

Some tropical plants thrive in high humidity conditions. Depending on where in the world you're located, high humidity can sometimes be a challenge, especially during the winter months. That's why many collectors of tropical plants will run a humidifier for their plants a couple of hours a day. If the person you're gifting to doesn't already have one, this could be a nifty gift for them.

Milsbo Glass Cabinet, IKEA $229

This IKEA glass cabinet creates an ideal condition for plants and mimics that of a greenhouse - excellent for people who collect rare plants. If the budget allows, include a couple of grow lights with this gift, and the person receiving it will be over the moon.

10 Tier Wooden Plant Stand, Wayfair $187

If an Ikea glass cabinet isn't their thing, perhaps this multi-tier plant stand is. Plants usually look better when grouped together making this gift like a functional piece of decor.

STOCKING STUFFERS UNDER $15

Moisture Meter, Amazon $15

2.5” Small Planter Pot, Woah Plants $8

How to Create a Minimalist Bookshelf

minimal bookshelf styling ideas- home decor nordic design woahstyle.com nathalie martin-2.jpg

The bookshelf in my living room has been in desperate need of a makeover for some time now.

Slowly over time, it had turned into a dumping ground for all of my random nicknacks and as you can see from the before picture below, it was looking very disorganized and unappealing.

Just like when I need outfit inspiration, I jumped onto Pinterest (@woahstyle) in search of "minimal bookshelf decor ideas" and started putting together a mood board.

minimal bookshelf styling ideas- home decor nordic design woahstyle.com nathalie martin 1.jpg

Based on the type of photos I was drawn to, I knew I had to scale back the amount of stuff on the shelves in order to achieve a minimal aesthetic.

I had also chosen a black and white color palette which meant I had to scale back color.

This was going to be hard considering, 1) how much stuff I have, and 2) that I'm inherently not a minimalistic type of person.

BEFORE

BEFORE

As you can see from the before photo, I already have a lot of stuff so my goal was to work with what I have.

A couple of things I should mention - in this redecorating challenge, I didn't want to go out and unnecessarily buy anything new.

2020 has been my low-buy year and my goal has been to shop more mindfully. It started with my closet but I've since applied the principal to every aspect of my life.

With that in mind, I went around each room of my house and gathered up as many black and white accessories that I could find and started working on my minimal, Scandinavian inspired bookshelf.

Here's how I did it.

STARTING OVER

STARTING OVER

HOW TO DECORATE A SCANDINAVIAN INSPIRED BOOKSHELF

  1. MAKE A MOODBOARD - It's no secret that Pinterest is my favorite place to gather inspiration. I pay attention to the commonalities in the types of images that I'm pinning so I can incorporate them into my own space. For my bookshelf, I was drawn to a clean and minimal aesthetic in a monochrome color palette.

  2. START FRESH - With my mood board in tow, the next step would be to tackle the cluttered bookshelf. I started by removing everything, including wall art. This gave me a chance to curate what items would now be living on the shelves, but also to clean and dust.

  3. CREATE A DESIGNATED YES AND NO PILE - When removing everything off the shelf I sorted items into yes and no piles. Colorful items automatically went into the no pile, while all black, white, and neutral decor went into the yes pile.

  4. START DECORATING - Working on one shelf at a time, I laid down a couple of statement pieces and kept the surrounding pieces pretty neutral. I also referred to my mood board along the way, which I found to be incredibly helpful.

  5. STEP BACK & ASSESS - The first few shelves came together surprisingly easily but then I got stuck on the middle shelves. I stepped away from everything and came back to it the next day with a fresh set of eyes, and after tackling it for another hour I realized that I didn't have anything in my collection to create the visual interest I was after. With that, I headed over to Indigo with a budget in mind and ended up finding a couple of vessels and candleholders with interesting shapes (in my monochromatic color palette of course), and go figure, those pieces brought everything together.

minimal bookshelf styling ideas- home decor nordic design woahstyle.com nathalie martin 3.jpg

Overall I love the finished look of my bookshelf and even Geoff mentioned that he's digging the minimal decor.

The cohesive black and white color gives the space a more sophisticated air and overall elevates the look of our living room.

With that done, I think I'm ready to tackle the next project. Decorating for Christmas!

Simple Fall Outfit

Considering how overwhelming and complicated the world feels right now, it’s good to take a step back and simplify things where we can.

Our closet is one of those places, and as superficial as it might be to talk about the importance of clothing during a worldwide pandemic, hear me out.

Wardrobe affects our psyche more than we might realize or even more than some of us care to admit. (Though I'm assuming not you because you're reading this post and scrolling through a fashion blog.)

I'm hoping if there's any good to come out of this year is our overall approach to fashion and just buying habits in general.

Hopefully, we can put the days of fashion fast and trend shopping in the past and move towards more sustainable buying habits.

Buy now, wear now, wear for years to come.

In this post, I'm wearing pieces that I've owned for a combined five years, and yes, that I still adore them.

I store them away in the off-seasons and bring them out when it's time.

I'm also wearing a new piece here, a black Maje pinstripe wool coat which I picked up recently at a sample sale.

It's timeless and classic yet cut in a modern way that suits my personal style.

I hope this post, and all of the fashion posts here on WoahStyle, inspire you to shop your own closet and come up with new outfit combinations that will excite you.

x, Nathalie

My Mid-Century Modern Inspired Bedroom

I spent a lot of time on Pinterest throughout the last few months studying images of bedroom decor, taking notes of what I like and what factors make a room work.

I knew that when designing our master, the decor had to be minimal, cozy, mid-century modern inspired (like the rest of our home), with a neutral color palette of grey, warm wood, and soft whites.

We also wanted to make a big impact on a small budget which meant we had to use our dollars wisely.

They one key element missing in our bedroom was a proper bed frame so we knew that's where a majority of the budget was going.

Plus, the bed is generally the focal point of any bedroom so it just made sense from a design standpoint.

From a function perspective, we went with an EQ3 bed seeing as we trust their solidly constructed furniture.

The customizable bed spoke to us for its clean lines and under the bed storage and we opted for six drawers (three on either side) to keep our space as clutter-free as possible.

TIP: If you're low on storage, consider a bed frame with drawers. Alternatively, you can get under the bed storage bins.

We also ended up getting a few accessories to bring the room to life:

  • a new duvet with a minimal pattern from EQ3

  • a couple of large charcoal grey planters that we scored for 60% off at the end of the season sale at the local nursery

  • a rubber tree plant

  • a gallon of charcoal paint from Canadian Tire in the shade Asphalt Grey PR16W08 in a flat matte finish

And that's it.

Everything else in the space, throw pillows, rugs, side tables, light fixtures, and even plants, we already had.

It's amazing how some paint and a new bed transformed our master bedroom into something completely different.

The finished result is even better than we had envisioned.

It's warm and inviting, minimal, and functional.

While the rest of our bedroom is still undergoing a makeover, I was excited to share the completed part with you.

Finally, if you're looking for more bedroom inspiration, make sure to check out my blog post, 14 Cozy Minimal Bedroom Ideasand follow me on Pinterest for daily home decor ideas.

Mid-Century Modern Style Dining Room: Get The Look at Target

MID CENTURY MODERN dining room - woahstyle.com 2.jpg

When it comes to home decor, mid-century modern is our go-to aesthetic. It's not too masculine, not too feminine, and feels warm and timeless with all of the wood accents found throughout.

Similar to a capsule wardrobe, I find it easy to change up the look of our dining room based on how we accessorize.

For example, I can choose to put sheepskin rugs on the chairs to create a cozy vibe, or I can leave the chairs bare.

The top of our round dining room table features bold geometric legs and feels like a statement piece on its own.

Again, I can change up the look and choose to leave it bare, or add a bowl of fruit, or a stack of books and a vase with pampas grass to the centre.

SHOP THE LOOK FROM TARGET

The most important thing is that our core pieces of furniture, chairs, table, light fixtures, work together to create the mid-century modern look we love so much.

Everything else is easily interchangeable (rugs, art, plants, etc.) if we want to change things up along the way or as seasons change.

In this post, you'll be able to shop the look of my living room with similar affordable pieces that I found at Target.

(BTW, I didn't link the white paper lamp to the side and the vintage table below it, as we're currently redecorating this area. You'll have wait until the fall when our new console table arrives to see the reveal.)

For daily home inspiration, make sure you follow me on Pinterest @woahstyle where I post home, fashion, and beauty content daily.
