Mid-Century Modern Style Dining Room: Get The Look at Target

MID CENTURY MODERN dining room - woahstyle.com 2.jpg

When it comes to home decor, mid-century modern is our go-to aesthetic. It's not too masculine, not too feminine, and feels warm and timeless with all of the wood accents found throughout.

Similar to a capsule wardrobe, I find it easy to change up the look of our dining room based on how we accessorize.

For example, I can choose to put sheepskin rugs on the chairs to create a cozy vibe, or I can leave the chairs bare.

The top of our round dining room table features bold geometric legs and feels like a statement piece on its own.

Again, I can change up the look and choose to leave it bare, or add a bowl of fruit, or a stack of books and a vase with pampas grass to the centre.

SHOP THE LOOK FROM TARGET

The most important thing is that our core pieces of furniture, chairs, table, light fixtures, work together to create the mid-century modern look we love so much.

Everything else is easily interchangeable (rugs, art, plants, etc.) if we want to change things up along the way or as seasons change.

In this post, you'll be able to shop the look of my living room with similar affordable pieces that I found at Target.

(BTW, I didn't link the white paper lamp to the side and the vintage table below it, as we're currently redecorating this area. You'll have wait until the fall when our new console table arrives to see the reveal.)

For daily home inspiration, make sure you follow me on Pinterest @woahstyle where I post home, fashion, and beauty content daily.

BLACK & WHITE Outfits We πŸ–€For Fall

black-and-white-looks-to-wear-this-fall.gif

Black and white is my go-to all year round but especially so during the fall when I want my outfits to make more of an impact.

Black and white is timeless yet bold and can be either as graphic or subdued as you want. It’s just a matter of how one accessorizes themselves. For a chic and elegant look, try feminine cat-eye sunglasses with a soft texture such as a light knit sweater paired with white trousers.

For a more daring look, pair black denim shorts with black leather boots (like these chunky sole Chelsea boots from Eytys), and a white oversized button-down. Opt for accessories in black leather with silver studded accents for bonus points.

Below you’ll find some of my favorite looks from my Black & White fashion board on Pinterest. If you’re not already following me there, make sure you do because I post daily outfit, home, and food ideas.

Hope you enjoy this post and get lots of good ideas of how to wear your favorite black and white pieces this fall.

3 FALL FASHIONS We Can't Wait To Wear

With fall just around the corner, I’ve been thinking about how I can refresh my closet without going out and buying a ton of new stuff. I have a closet full of basics and statement pieces so if I do decide to add something new to my wardrobe, it’ll probably be a new take on a classic - like a chunky knit cardigan with a balloon sleeve or a leather shirt that can be worn as a top or a jacket.

In this post, I’ve gathered some of my favorite fall looks from Pinterest that can help transition our outfits from summer to fall. I’ll focus on timeless fabrics and textures such as denim, knits, and leather in a neutral color palette so you too can create a capsule wardrobe that will work in harmony this fall season. These textures can be deemed as trendy when they’re cut in a contemporary manner (like a knitted front knot crop top or leather culottes) but I feel like they’re ultimately classic pieces that can be worn and for years to come, and if you ask me, that’s money well spent.

1// NEW KNITS

This season think outside of the box from your traditional knitwear and go for strong shoulders, chunky knits, knitted skirts, and even knitted pants to make a cozy statement.

2// LEATHER WEATHER

Leather is one of my favourite things to wear during the fall. From leather shirts, to trench coats, leather pants, leather shorts, the sky’s the limit. Pair it with knits, sweatshirts, or wool for a timeless look.

3// The Return of Denim

After spending months in lockdown wearing sweats, day in and day out, I’m excited about getting back into jeans.I recently got a pair of straight leg boyfriend jeans from Saint Laurent (on sale for $89) and I can’t wait to wear them with wool coats, sneakers or ankle boots. Bring on the chilly weather.

VIDEO: Armani Shade Expansion, Luminous Silk Foundation

I’ve been using Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundations for years, however, I’m between shades. (Admittedly I was wearing the wrong shade for well over a year but that’s a whole other topic.) With 10 new shades in their line up, it’s about time they expanded their foundation shades don’t you think? Better late than never!

Make sure you click on the video above to hear my thoughts on this iconic makeup and my preferred way of applying it.

Lazy Sunday Morning

lazy sunday morning.jpg

Weekends are all about relaxing, and this past weekend we hopped in the car and drove over to the Niagara region for a little hike in Ball’s Falls Conservation area, some wine tasting at Cave Spring, and vintage shopping at Pudhomme Antique Market.

And while it’s nice to get dressed up, sometimes a hoodie and pair of men’s cotton gym shorts are the perfect cozy attire to get you through the rest of the weekend. Happy Monday, and wishing everyone a good week ahead!

VIDEO TUTORIAL: How To Paint Your Nails Perfectly At Home

I love doing my own nails and barely ever go to the salon to get them done. In this video I'll be sharing my tips (haha) and techniques on how I get the perfect manicure at home. Hope you enjoy this video and stay safe! Nathalie

PRODUCTS USED

At Home Manicure: How to Paint Your Nails At Home Like A Pro

  • Before you start, remove any old polish

  • If you’re starting with bare nails, like me, wash your hands first to remove any oils that might be on your hands as this could compromise not only how your nail polish goes on, but also the lifespan of your manicure.

How to Get The Perfect Manicure At Home 1.gif
  • I like the length of my nails right now so I’m just going to quickly clean up the shape by trimming them into a soft oval shape as it compliments my fingers best.

  • Taking my nail file, I’m going to lightly buff anyway any dead skin from around my cuticles.

  • Using the point of metal file, I’m going to gently lift hand hangnails and file them away - only using the clippers if I really need it. They scare me so I try to stay away.

  • Next I’m going to condition my cuticles using some cuticle oil while avoiding the nails. Remember - the oil can impact the quality and lifespan of your manicure so avoid your nails. Take a Q Tip with a bit of nail polish remover to get rid of any oil that might have transferred to your nails.

How to Get The Perfect Manicure At Home 2.gif
  • Now I’m going to use a base coat to help the polish go on better to prevent chipping (if you’re short on time, feel free to skip this step).

  • When applying your polish, start in the centre, just a touch below the cuticle and pull the colour down with the brush. Do the same on each side of the nail.

  • To avoid brush stokes, try not to pass the brush through the nails too many times.

  • Have your wooden orange stick nearby to clean up the edges.

  • Every nail polish colour is different so it’s up to you whether to apply 2-3 coats.

  • Finish your manicure with a top coat to help it last longer.

The best nail hack you need to know and it’s FREE!

  • Now I’m going to quick dry my nails using this hack I learned about on youtube by adding add a few ice cubes to a bowl and filling it with just enough water so I can dip all of my nails comfortably in the bowl.

  • Now I’ll dip my nails in for 3-5 minutes, only taking my hands out when I need a break from the freezing cold water. But that’s it. It really works and sets my polish way better than those quick dry sprays and it’s free! Trust me, if you’re like me and like to do your nails at home, this is the only hack you need to know!

How to Get The Perfect Manicure At Home 4.gif

Now that my nails are done, I’ll moisturize my hands, avoiding my nails for the time being. And that’s it. Done. Hope you enjoy my technique of how to get the perfect nails at home!

DECOR: Sideboard Ideas for Your Home

I did it. I finally convinced Geoff to buy a new dining room table.

Our previous six to eight seat Parsons table served us well for over a decade but was ultimately too bulky for our narrow townhouse and in turn made the room appear smaller. As beautiful as it was, I always knew it wasn't right for us but at the time, we wanted something large to accommodate having big groups of people over for dinner. Well, those dinners only happen a couple of times a year so we didn't exactly think that one through.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned over the years in terms of decorating a home or building a good closet is to be patient in the search for the right pieces.

And, after years of being patient and looking, we finally came across the right table - a round four-seater with black geometric legs and a glass top with an eclectic vibe.

Finding a sideboard to go with such an odd table was going to take time but we were adamant about finding one. Instead of matching the unique aesthetic of our table, we set out looking for a sideboard with contrast. Something different that would compliment and not compete.

At first, my mind was fixated on a traditional 50” sideboard but I knew it would be too bulky for our space. That’s when Geoff stepped in and narrowed it down to an entryway cabinet measuring 36” wide and 40” high from CB2 - currently on backorder but said to be arriving in August.

Anyway, what did I learn from this? Don’t confine to traditional ideas of how things should be done. I inherently know this, yet I got overwhelmed with all of the options and wasn't able to think clearly. When you find this happening, take a step back and tackle it at a later time.

And, remember to have fun with the design process! Think outside of the box with furniture options and even where it’s going to live in your home. Follow your gut and don’t overthink it. And when you do need some inspo, head over to Pinterest and follow my Home page where I share daily ideas.

For this post, I've included some of my favorite sideboard inspiration below. I hope you're able to collect ideas for yourself - whether you're buying a new piece or just rearranging your living space. And remember, fun decorating!

The SSENSE SALE Is Here! My Tips for Shopping Markdowns.

rose huntington whiteley.png

Twice a year the SSENSE sale comes around I swear it feels even more exciting than Christmas. Yes, that’s a tall order but I’ve scored some pretty amazing things over the years - Givenchy high heels for $200, Isabel Marant boots from $1300 down to $300, and Saint Laurent studded loafers for $250.

Now more than ever it’s important to focus on buying pieces that will serve you well for years to come, not just a single season. Buy less and focus on quality over quantity. Look for pieces that will make you happy and feel more confident when you wear them.

Finally, review your closet, make a list of what needs replacing or what you’re currently missing - ie, a classic spring trench coat.

With that being said, below are some looks I’ve put together based on items that I have my eye on - mainly loungewear and sensible statement shoes - like those amazing 3.1 Phillip Lim platform sandals that I’m dying to get my hands on.

Happy shopping!

get the look josefine hj 2.jpg

Take it from @josefinehj, loungewear can be really cute when dressed up with gold hoops and white Nike socks. Crossing my fingers that her navy t-shirt from LA brand, Sporty & Rich will be included in today’s markdowns.

olsen minimal style 2020.jpg

I don’t know about you but going back to wearing normal clothes is going to be hard once we come out of quarantine. This Olsen inspired outfit is more dressed up than sweatpants without compromising on comfort.

rose huntington whiteley lounge wear.jpg

This outfit by @rosiehw is what you would wear lounging around the house on the weekend. It’s cute, feminine but comfortable. I’m seriously hoping that these Aime Leon Dore pants will be included in the markdowns because I’m obsessed with the color!

Another outfit to ease us into normal life once quarantine is over. This outfit by @brittanybathgate is perfect for spring/summer. Since we can’t see her shoes in the photo, I styled the above lookbook with crossover sandals from Marni, which are available in ivory or black. *Please go on sale!*
